Gahanwer Ali Laghari officially assumed the charge of the managing director of the Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) on Monday.
Officials said he was formally welcomed by Zahid Ali Abbasi, secretary, School Education and Literacy Department (SE&LD), Shahpara Rizvi, deputy managing director (DMD), SEF, and the SEF management.
Welcoming the MD, Abbasi provided a brief overview of the SEF’s role and initiatives. He expressed confidence in Laghari’s leadership, noting that he brings extensive and diverse experience across major portfolios.
Secretary Abbasi said, “It is a privilege to have Laghari lead SEF. His vast expertise will be instrumental in driving positive impact, and together, we will work towards further strengthening the Foundation’s mission.”
Shahpara Rizvi highlighted that the SEF has significantly expanded its educational initiatives to provide free and quality education, particularly in remote and underserved areas of the province. As of 2024, the SEF supports just under one million students across more than 2,800 schools, 35 public schools, 223 learning centers, and 125 micro-schools, in collaboration with more than 1,400 private partners, including individuals and organizations.
The secretary suggested that SEF may lead the reforms of the Adopt a School Programme, which has been notable in revitalizing government schools through public-private partnerships. The programme has facilitated the adoption of around 400 government schools by around 100 adopters across Sindh, benefiting over 120,000 children.
He added that SEF is also expanding its Adolescent and Adult Learning and Training Program (AALTP) by establishing 200 more centers to cater to 30,000 out-of-school children.
Rizvi also shared that the SEF operates 35 People’s Schools across the province, enrolling over 25,000 students. These schools are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including modern classrooms, science and computer labs, libraries, and sports facilities. The program focuses on providing quality education.
Another major upcoming initiative is People’s STEAM Schools with an emphasis on STEAM, IT, and life skills. The three schools have been completed and are ready to hand over by the SE&LD to the SEF. Through these multifaceted programmes, the SEF continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing educational access and quality in Sindh.
